My doctors can't seem to figure out my specific condition, so I'm asking around to find out if anyone's had this problem, and/or knows viable treatment methods to deal with it. I'm 37 and frankly some days I hope I don't live to be 38. I work a work-from-home job where I have to sit a lot (tech support). I exercise when I can. I have been checked this year via detailed stress test and have been found to have an extra healthy, fully oxygenated heart. I had a slipped L5/S1 disc in my lower back in 2004, and have been dealing with chronic back pain ever since. I have pain in my shoulder blades all the time, and I get lower back pain if I lift too much. But what I'm about to describe is a separate type of pain, and very different.

My problem is this, and it's hard to describe. It starts with a non-specific pain in my upper back, sometimes it feels like it's in my throat, sometimes it feels like it's in my upper back, or sometimes both. I've found no specific triggers for it except it seems to happen when I'm working (sitting at my desk chair). Gradually it gets worse, the pain in my rear ribcage, and it will radiate to my front side, to the point where even breathing hurts. I can get up and walk around, try and rub my own back against a corner, it gets some of what FEELS like tension out, but it just comes back in a few seconds after I sit back down or lie back down (and be still). At this point it's disturbingly bad. Painkillers don't stop it, at all. Sleep would stop it, but it's usually too bad at this point to even sleep if I do nothing about it. The only thing that stops it is prescription diazepam, which my doctor says can act as a muscle relaxant. But to be honest, I don't want to have to take this substance every day.

The problem has evolved over the last several years from occuring once every half year to once every month to once a week...and in the last two weeks, it's been happening every other day and is beginning to worry me. The pattern is the same...much like a migraine sufferer, if I don't kill it early with the diazepam, it usually just spirals out of control until I sleep from exhaustion or self-medicate. All my doctor can tell me based on the evidence is: Sounds like muscle spasms to me. Well, yes, that's pretty obvious, but the question is why is it happening, is there a commonly associated medical condition with this, and when can I get myself out of it?

I also have Type 2 diabetes, suffer from frequent morning cramps in my legs and feet (I always figured due to the injury). I also have been diagnosed with anxiety disorder (used to have panic attacks, that is what the prescription diazepam is for). I have thought maybe Fibromyalgia, but I think muscle groups are becoming involved in these events when they occur, and I don't know enough about Fibromyalgia to be sure.

Advice from anyone would be appreciated, or even links to other discussion groups on this topic. Doctors are having problems figuring out what's wrong with me, and I don't want to keep living like this.

It sounds like Upper and Lower Cross Syndrome. This is due to bad posture from years and years of sitting. You can google these for a little more info. Your muscles are designed to work at a specific length. This is not only important for the muscle but it also keeps from adding stress to a joint that a muscle crosses. When you have bad posture, say your shoulders are too far forward or your chin juts forward this makes some muscles longer than they are suppose to be and others shorter. This alters the forces the muscles apply to the joint leading to added stress on the joint they cross. The problem with this is that years and years of these imbalances create wear and tear on the joints.
I hope this is making sense.
The good news is these imbalances can be fixed fairly easily if you can find someone that knows what they are doing. Find someone in your area that specializes in Functional Rehabilitation or functional movement. There are chiros, PT's and trainers that specialize in this type of stuff. Your doc can load you up with meds, and you can try heat and ice but until you correct the cause of the problem the pain will never cease. Take a look at the sources and maybe you can find someone who can help.

While most folks believe that back pain is only found in adults that is indeed not the case. Back pain in children is becoming a more common condition.

Back pain is found in adults of all ages and rest assured that almost all of us will suffer from back pain at some point in our lives. Back pain is not just a malady of the old and decrepit. It is an issue that can attack at any age. In fact there are many children who experience back troubles that can result in back pain. Back pain in children can be a result of an injury or a genetic abnormality that effects the back's construction.

Often times back pain in children is easy to fix. For example, a heavy backpack carried incorrectly can lead to back pain can be a primary culprit.

Think about it parents!

What are we doing to our kids when we send them out the door loaded down with a backpack full and slung over one shoulder?

Stop your children and teach them how to carry a heavy backpack correctly!

When it is necessary to carry a heavy backpack then place the heavier items closer to the back and place the straps over both shoulders in order to more fairly distribute the weight which will also make the load easier to carry.

My daughter was insistent on carrying the latest fashion trend in backpacks but there was no padding in the shoulder straps. I am guessing to make it more fashionable. But those thin straps just dug into her shoulders and caused her to slump forward, which lead to poor posture, another common issue that can cause back pain in children. If your child fusses with back pain, stop first and take a look at the backpack. It could be rather easy to remedy the situation.

It is hard to believe but sometimes just the pains of growing can lead to back pain in children. Often times, teenagers especially experience back aches and pains because of sudden growth spurts. Physicians report that they see many more complaints of back pain in children over 12 years old than they do in those younger.

Back pain in children should not be ignored.

It should be taken seriously and steps should be taken in order to help your child find relief from back pain. Again, take a look at the simple things like too heavy a back pack, poor posture, a bad mattress, or even a lack of sleep all of which can cause back pain in children.

I have a herniated disc on L5-S1. The pain is getting worse. I had 2 ESIs and did PT. I don't want a surgery, but it's not getting better. : (

Please let me know what you think or if you've tried "True Back" or "Lose the Back Pain". Both stated that you can get $ back if it doesn't work. I wonder if I should try them.

This generation did not invent back pain. Back pain has been around probably since man began walking upright, or maybe before. Back pain sometimes starts when we bend over at an odd angle. There have been treatments for back pain long before what we know today as Western medicine was even a glimmer in the eye of the first med student. The AMA (American Medical Association) considers all medical disciplines other than their own as alternative medicine. It doesn't matter that most of what they refer to as alternative medicine has been around many centuries longer than they have. Alternative medicine for treating back pain includes such practices as acupuncture. Acupuncture has been practiced for over 5,000 years now. Acupressure is closely related to acupuncture but without the needles. The idea of acupressure is to put pressure on specific points in the body, using only hands and fingers to restore the balance of Qi and thus relieve pain. Herbs have been used to relieve pain for thousands of years. Today's pain-relieving medications are mostly synthetic reproductions of these long-used and natural herbs. The main difference is that the synthetic reproductions often produce a lot of side effects, but the natural herbs they are based upon do not. Chiropractors have been manipulating spines for many years. Hippocrates said, "Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases." Chiropractic medicine as we recognize it today wasn't actually established until 1895. The AMA was established in 1847, so they do have a jump on chiropractors as such. To relieve back pain, try alternating heat and cold on the sorest spot. Use a heating pad for about five minutes. Heat helps to improve blood circulation, and the increased blood circulation will relieve pain. Then use an ice pack on the same spot for about five minutes. The ice will help to prevent or reduce swelling. Swelling causes pain, and if it can be reduced, so will the pain. Draw a nice warm bath and add about a cup of Epsom salt to the water. Soak in the tub and add additional warm water as needed. The body will absorb magnesium from the Epsom salt, and magnesium is a natural muscle relaxant. Relaxing the muscles that are involved in the pain will help to reduce the pain as well. Back pain has been around as long as man himself and so has seeking relief of that pain. When your back hurts, you simply want to relieve the pain, and if alternative medicine can do that for you without using synthetic drugs or scalpels, then it might be a very good choice, indeed. The one thing that every sufferer of back pain wants is help. He or she wants relief and they want it sooner rather than later. Dont talk to them about any healing process. They want help. They want relief. And they want both NOW! Those who suffer with back pain can be a tad short-tempered and more than a little irritable. They want relief and those who must live with them want them to get relief as quickly as possible. It is no comfort at all to those who are suffering with back pain, but you really aren't alone. About 90 percent of adults will suffer from back pain in their lifetimes. It is also important to know that your back pain is most likely NOT being caused by a slipped disc. Slipped discs are the cause of only about 3% of all back pain and there is only a 1-in-1,000 chance that your back pain will result in surgery. The odds are greatly in your favor.
